It would have been nice to take a single flight to Europe, and a single flight back. That would have been too easy. Instead, owing to runway repairs at an international airport that is less than 4 years old, I was obliged to take a domestic flight to another international airport before catching the plane to Lisbon. Same on the way back - 4 flights instead of two.
My trip was a month long, start to finish, and required staying in 7 hotels, travelling on 2 trains, a further8 flights, 2 car hires, several taxis and multiple bus rides. I stayed with family on three occasions so could have notched up another 3 hotels.
Needless to say, I slept well once I got back home. And now the work begins in converting notes to articles, blog summaries and stock images.
A year ago I made one dire mistake in my preparations for an almost equally complex journey … I forgot to take my debit and credit cards! Not recommended even if you do have cash in hand. On this occasion I admit to making one error - I forgot that, because of flight unavailability on the day I wanted to leave Sicily, I had to leave for Venice a day earlier. What had I forgotten? A hotel for that night. Luckily I checked my schedule and realised my mistake, with enough time to book an hotel. I would have preferred to stay an extra night in the hotel already booked but they were full.
All worked out well in the end.
Over the last few days, I've posted some of my food and drink experiences. A few more of those are on the way but before I do that I shall start posting some feedback on the places, restaurants, bars and hotels where I stayed.
